State the consequences. Explain to the drinker
what you will do if he or she doesn't go for help.
The goal here is to put some teeth into the intervention,
but this can come from a place of love and concern. What you say may range from refusing to go
with the person to any social activity where alcohol will
be served, to
divorce. Do not make any threats
you are not prepared to carry out or the person may never
again trust that you are serious about their problem.
Have things lined out. Gather information in advance about
treatment options in your community.
