What is alcoholism?
Alcoholism, also called
"alcohol dependence," is a disease comprised of four symptoms:
- Craving: A strong urge, or desire, to drink.
- Loss of control: The inability to control one's
drinking even though the intent to do so may exist.
- Physical dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as
queasiness, sweating, shakiness, and angst, occurs when alcohol use is
ended after a period of serious drinking.
- Tolerance: Over time one must drink more
alcohol in order to get the same effect as previously got with less.
